“My long-term goal is to create a training facility here like you would see at a college or high school. A reputable and accessible place to go for evaluation of chronic joint problems, for a stretching program to help with mobility issues, or modality treatment to address pain and inflammation and help with healing. “I want members with a chronic injury to come to me for treatment and a rehab plan. Let me look at you before you go to the doctor. Let’s look at and evaluate an injury and create an environment most conducive to healing. Let me collaborate with your physician or answer their questions or make an easy referral if you don’t know who to see. “I’ve got a lot of education looking at and evaluating orthopedic injuries. I want to be that stand-in for a member before they see a primary care physician and a specialist.” STAYING IN SHAPE FOR GOLF Joe’s still your guy and he’s particularly passionate about this subject. “If you’re trying to stay on the golf course as long as possible, you need to exercise the right body parts to be healthy and fit. Guys who neglect stretching and strengthening certain joints just won’t hit the ball the way they want to hit it. “I’ve got a golf warmup protocol I can show and teach. I set up a stretching table on the range on Fridays for members before rounds. Members can also make an appointment time with me before they play to stretch them out.” The Club is emphasizing walking and playing golf with caddies to ease the wear and tear on the golf course this season. Joe loves the benefits of that, says members need to make sure they’re ready, and encourages anyone who’s interested to ask for help from him, Becky Carder or Katy Longhofer to get in shape. Besides stretching and implementing a program to improve cardio fitness, Joe advises a gait or general orthopedic evaluation for older members. “Let’s look at how you walk and the integrity of your balance to make sure there isn’t proclivity for stumbling or a fall, and at whether you remain balanced and strongly upright when you swing. If you’ve fallen, come see me and we’ll make a correction in your swing. “Proper footwear can be part of orthopedic or gait evaluation and something that becomes necessary to a literal course correction. The pros in the Golf Shop can help with that.” Joe takes on our question about the benefits of pull carts versus riding or carrying clubs. “A lot of people use the walking remote control battery cart so they can still walk the course. I’m comfortable with people carrying their bag if they feel comfortable and I can work with them to do that. One PD member has carried his bag his entire life. We work together to maintain the proper strength and balance he needs.” RICH IN SUNSETS We consider that if you’re a PD golfer, it’s probably good to keep putting your money on Joe. Golf is his main hobby now. He says he became a serious golfer in his mid 20s. He loves the practice, play, shop talk, tips from work buddies, club selection, flight spin and wooing Eva into the magical place of the summer solus at Prairie Dunes. From What am I going to do? Where am I going to go? to working this many years later with the likes of former PD Superintendent Jim Campbell in the fitness center, he’s come home to pay you back. “After having rotator cuff surgery on both my left and right shoulders, Joe has been instrumental in rehabilitating them to the point where I can now play golf pain free. His past employment with the surgeon who performed both procedures gave him a deep understanding of my specific injuries and the recovery process. That background allowed him to tailor my rehabilitation with precision, confidence, and a level of insight that made a noticeable difference in my progress. Thanks to Joe’s expertise and consistent guidance, my shoulders remain strong, stable and injury free.” —Kevin Bowen, PD member “I am a senior golfer. Joe worked weekly with me most of this winter. I have experienced significant improvement in my golf fitness over that time. My mobility and flexibility have improved. My stability and balance are also much better. I recommend Joe highly.” —Dr. David Weidensaul, PD member 21
